About John
It was whilst at school when John’s creative and artistic flare was first recognised, which
encouraged him to study Art and Design at Bournemouth and Poole College. Once qualified,
a role as an interior designer and window dresser took him to London, where his career as a
professional designer and artist began.
On returning home to Dorset, John began to explore another area of design in the form of
custom designing and building cars, during which time he opened his first business. At this
point, John began to develop skills in the technique of airbrushing, which allowed him to
produce uniquely eye catching designs on the bodywork of his vehicles. Once he had honed
his skills, he then opened Auto Fantasy, a custom car paint shop through which he was able
to exhibit his work and develop his reputation as a master within his field. During his artistic
career, John has produced remarkable works of art which achieve photographic realism, and
capture stunning scenes of wildlife and human portraits.
Having perfected his skills in 2D form and exploring its limitations, John was inspired to
further grow his repertoire of talents and began to produce 3D sculpture. He received national
recognition in the press for his wooden garden sculptures, which culminated in him appearing
on the BBC’s Blue Peter and earning him an elusive Blue Peter badge! In response to this he
was approached to produce a bespoke work of art by a Global company.
It was now that John was inspired to further develop his sculpture technique and learned the
art of artistic blacksmithing .This enabled John to take his sculptures to a whole new level; he
began producing life-size works of art based upon animal forms, his most impressive being a
rearing stallion standing some 9’6’’ high, which took centre stage at the Sandpolo event at
Sandbanks in Poole.
It is rare that an artist is able to become proficient in more than one medium, yet John has an
innate ability to not only turn his hand to any art form, but to hone that skill and perfect it,
enabling him to continue to produce magnificently unique yet distinctive pieces. John works
in his self-built studio and workshop on the edge of the New Forest and uses the environment
around him as a source of inspiration.
Most recently, John has focused on refining the rare and ancient form of Verre Églomisé, a
technique of gilding, using gold and copper leaf on glass. This medium has allowed John to
create exquisite works of art, inspired by the natural world and which encapsulate an essence
of antiquity.
